Meet Dr. Jennifer Short
Psychological Consultant
I first began my work in policing in 2006 as a Crime Analyst and have been a Registered Psychologist since 2008. I continued my work with first responders, primarily police, since that time in various capacities that include: program development, facilitation, and evaluation; Mental Health Strategy development; recruit selection assessment; clinical therapy and assessment; consultation for negotiations and forensic interviews; crime analysis; and more! I'm passionate about the impact the Service culture has on the effectiveness and wellness of members, as well as the effectiveness of programs. I believe it is essential to not just provide excellent resources and programs, but also foster a culture in which they will be successful.
I was the inaugural Chair of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Psychological Services Committee. Since 2021, I have been a member of the Joint Knowledge Subcommittee of the Mental Health Collaborative Tables for Public Safety Personnel.

Specializations
Culture Consultation
Strategic Guidance
The organizational culture impacts everything the Service and its membership is trying to achieve: safety, effectiveness, wellness, training, programs, and more. This means that a healthy, supportive, safe environment is an essential starting point. I evaluate the current culture and provide an individualized approach to further enhancing it to move the Service forward in a strategic, evidence-based way. This can include recommendations for you to implement, a full strategy, or somewhere in between.
Leadership Development
Fostering Potential
Leadership in a high performing and high stress environment is challenging. Leadership development offerings provide leaders with the knowledge, skills, and guidance to have the difficult conversations, foster a healthy team environment, and support success and wellness. Available services include coaching, training, and consulting.
Program Development & Evaluation
Fostering Wellness
There is increasing recognition in first-responder organizations that availability of programs can help to prevent psychological injury or foster recovery in first responder communities. This service involves systematically designing and implementing wellness initiatives that are based on your Service's needs and the scientific research. Already have programs in place? I can also evaluate and revise programs to foster maximum effectiveness.
Training Solutions
Engaging Solutions
Sometimes it works well to keep things simple. Individual training opportunities for first-responders and their families can empower individuals with the skills to maintain their wellness and foster their potential. With various topics available, you can find what you're looking for...or send a recommendation for a new offering.
